WELCOME!

My name is Abram van der Fluit, and I currently teach Biology and Culinary Arts at Maywood Academy High School.

 

I was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands (Go Feyenoord!) and immigrated to Los Angeles when I was 7 years old.  After some difficulty assimilating to the culture and struggling through high school, I went to Moorpark Community College and then transferred to UC Santa Cruz.  I graduated in 1998, and started teaching in LAUSD as a substitute.  I had my credential by 2000, and began my career teaching science!

 

In 2011 I started a catering business on the side, the Wrigley BBQ.  Little did I know that it would lead me to teaching Culinary Arts in 2022.  It's been a great experience - sharing with my studenets what I've learned about cooking and running a small business.  In 2024 we even got a Food Truck donated to us by Intuit!  It's been a wild and crazy ride... and it's not over yet :-)

 

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy hiking, camping, watching movies and listening to music with my wife and two children (20 and 17).
